Discussion for the Bear Canyon Loop (CCW) Route — conditions, questions, and the long, circling journey through exposed ridges, creek crossings, and the shifting heart of Bear Canyon.
Moving counter-clockwise, this loop begins with a gradual approach through desert flats before pulling you into the rising contours of Bear Canyon. The CCW direction stretches out the climb, letting the elevation come slowly as you traverse open slopes, step across seasonal creek lines, and move toward the canyon’s narrower middle miles.
From the higher vantage points, the canyon shifts in shape and color—walls tightening, shade appearing briefly, then slipping away again. The return delivers a patient descent, giving you long views toward the lower basin and the distant pull of Sabino Canyon. This loop rewards endurance, steady pacing, and awareness of heat and shifting terrain.

What I share comes from the rhythms and stories of the Catalina Mountains. It’s meant for awareness, not instruction, and it’s never a substitute for checking official maps, forecasts, or park updates.
The desert can be beautiful and unforgiving — know your limits; going out is optional, getting back is mandatory.
Stay aware, stay hydrated, and if that feels right, let’s step onto the trail together.
