Discussion for the Phoneline Loop (CCW) Route — conditions, questions, and the shifting traverse above Sabino Canyon’s long spine.
AA classic Sabino route that climbs quickly onto the ridgeline, carrying you above the canyon floor and into the exposed, sunlit miles that define the Phoneline experience. Moving counter-clockwise, the loop begins with a patient rise before settling into the long, undulating traverse toward the high overlook points.
This direction emphasizes the slow reveal: the canyon widens beneath you, the walls change shape, and the desert’s stillness becomes your companion. The descent returns you through the lower washes and soft sand, stitching you back into the rhythm of Sabino Canyon. It’s a route shaped by heat, openness, and perspective.

What I share comes from the rhythms and stories of the Catalina Mountains. It’s meant for awareness, not instruction, and it’s never a substitute for checking official maps, forecasts, or park updates.
The desert can be beautiful and unforgiving — know your limits; going out is optional, getting back is mandatory.
Stay aware, stay hydrated, and if that feels right, let’s step onto the trail together.
